October 15 Is the Deadline for Extended 2025 Individual Tax Returns
If you received an extension for your 2025 federal individual income tax return, October 15 is the deadline to file it.
What if you still owe tax?
Your 2025 federal income tax payment was generally due April 15, 2026. If you did not pay enough by then, interest and a late payment penalty may apply even if you file by October 15. The extension gave you more time to prepare and file an accurate return. It did not extend the time to pay any tax owed. Paying what you can now will reduce the amount that continues to accrue.
What if you cannot pay the full balance?
File the return on time anyway. Filing and paying are separate obligations, and missing the extended filing deadline can add a failure to file penalty to a balance that is already accruing charges. You can review IRS payment options for the remaining amount, but file before the deadline, even if you can’t pay.
What if you are expecting a refund?
There is no failure to file penalty when no tax is owed, but you must file a return to claim the refund. Filing now also gives you a chance to resolve missing forms or other questions while the information is easier to gather.

Before you file
Make sure you have accounted for all relevant 2025 income and deductions. That may include Forms W-2 and 1099, investment sales, business or rental activity, estimated tax payments, and any information needed to support credits. If you made an extension payment, confirm that it appears on the return.
Check for disaster relief
October 15 is the standard federal deadline, but some taxpayers affected by federally declared disasters have a later filing date. Check the IRS relief notice that applies to your location before assuming the standard date governs your return. For example, the IRS has postponed certain 2025 return filing deadlines for eligible taxpayers in Washington State, Hawaii and other locations; however, that relief does not retroactively extend payments that were due April 15, 2026.
If your 2025 return is still unfinished, now is the time to gather the remaining records and get it filed. GurelCPA can help you complete the return, account for payments already made, and address a balance due.
