The New IRS App Puts More Tax Tools on Your Phone
The IRS has updated and renamed its IRS2Go mobile app. Now called the IRS app, it gives taxpayers access to more account information and services from a phone or tablet. If you already use IRS2Go, you do not need to download a separate app: it will update automatically if automatic updates are enabled, or you can update it through your app store.
What can you do in the app?
After signing in, you can view available balance and payment information, make or schedule a payment, check the status of a refund or amended return, and access tax records and transcripts. You can also read available IRS notices and letters and manage certain account details. The app connects to your Individual Online Account; signing in to use the new features involves identity verification through ID.me.
You do not have to sign in for every task. For example, the app lets you check refund or amended-return status without signing in and find guest payment options.
One useful feature to look for is your Identity Protection PIN, or IP PIN. This six-digit number helps prevent someone else from filing a federal tax return using your Social Security number or individual taxpayer identification number. Your IRS Individual Online Account provides access to it, and the updated app offers a mobile route to account services.

Get the genuine app
The IRS app is free and available for Apple and Android devices. The safest starting point is the IRS app page on IRS.gov, which links to the official listings in the Apple App Store and Google Play. Avoid download links in advertisements or unexpected texts and emails. The IRS says it will not ask for personal information through an unsolicited text, email, or pop-up message.
The app adds a convenient way to handle selected tasks, but IRS.gov and the IRS Individual Online Account remain useful when you need other forms, guidance, or account services. If you encounter a look-alike app or suspected tax scam, you can report it through IRS.gov/submitatip.
